Before you get rid of an item, does it need fixing? Repair cafés are places where visitors can bring broken items to be fixed by volunteers, and these are growing in number – currently the nearest repair café is in Leeds.
If you simply don’t use it, consider whether it could be useful again given another purpose. For example, old clothes could be upcycled into cushion covers; scrap paper can be turned into decorative notebooks.
Unwanted clothing, shoes, accessories, books, DVDs and CDs or electrical items (anything with a plug) that is suitable for re-use can donated at any of the British Heart Foundation banks on campus. There are donation banks in every college. You can also sell unwanted items through the York Uni Swap Shop, or donate the item through York Freecycle.
