By shopping locally, not only do you boost the local economy, but you help to build local communities. Taking a reusable bag to the shops saves on carrier bag charges, which soon adds up. Shopping locally also cuts down on transport costs to get your shopping home – there is even a student cooperative shop and a regular food market on campus.
When buying tea, coffee, sugar, bananas and other food items, consider buying Fairtrade to give farmers and producers better prices and working conditions. York is a Fairtrade city and there are a large number of cafes, restaurants and shops that sell fairtrade products. The University is also fairtrade certified, so look out for fairtrade options on campus.
