  • York Bike Belles run a monthly Cake Confidence scheme to support people to start, or return to cycling.
  • Considering buying a bike?  i-Travel York has some advice about the style that may be right for you.  WhyCycle also has guides on which size of bike to buy and a jargon-buster.
  • Unwanted bikes are regularly cleaned from campus and are sold at the start of the academic year.
  • You can also hire a bike – the University has a Pool Bike Scheme for travelling between campuses. It is necessary to become a member first before hiring a bike for the first time.

  • Free bicycle pumps are now available on campus – find them at Derwent, Goodricke and Alcuin Colleges.
  • Discounted cycle equipment is available to buy from the University mailroom or YUSU helpdesk.

  • Learn how to keep your bicycle secure on campus.
  • Regularly give your bike a quick check to keep it running smoothly and safely.

  • The University runs a free ‘Bike Doctor’ scheme at various locations  for routine cycle maintenance. Book a place to avoid disappointment.

Your safety

  • Make yourself visible to other road users by being prepared and being alert.
  • Consider wearing reflective clothing for your cycle to/from the University. Free high vis slap wraps and vests are available from the Travel and Transport department. Email with your details and these can be posted on to you.
